Zoning board rejects solar farm next to Winnebago County apple orchard – WREX

ROCKFORD (WREX) — A proposed solar farm in rural Winnebago County has been rejected by local officials.
In a Wednesday night meeting, the Winnebago County Zoning Board of Appeals struck down a proposal to build a solar farm northwest of Rockford. The decision was unanimous.
In the meeting, board members said the paperwork was properly submitted, but that it was not a good location for the panels.
The solar panels, a project proposed by Pivot Energy, would have been built next to Curran’s Orchard. In a post to social media earlier this week, the orchard’s owners spoke out against the proposal, saying in part:
“An 8′ cyclone fence with thousands of solar cells next to our property would destroy the warm, welcoming rural atmosphere of our orchard that our friends & customers have come to appreciate. It would have a devastating impact on our orchard.”
