Spanish independent power producer Grenergy has signed a long-term hybrid power purchase agreement with Georgia Power, a US utility, according to the source. The contract covers the entire output of the Beaver Creek hybrid project, which consists of 229MW solar photovoltaic capacity and 183MWh battery energy storage. The facility is located in Baldwin County, Georgia, and the 20-year offtake agreement is part of the utility’s Clean and Renewable Energy Subscription (CARES) 2023 programme. That programme enables commercial and industrial customers to support their sustainability efforts through the development of solar PV resources.
Commercial operation of the project is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2028, with offtake starting in May 2029. Once the hybrid plant is operational, Georgia Power will handle the market operations for the battery storage system.
Grenergy has been active in the US since 2022 and currently holds a portfolio of 1.2GW solar capacity, 1.7GWh of hybrid projects, and 2.3GWh of standalone battery storage. It already operates two projects in Texas: Stadium (25MWh) and La Feria (25MWh).
The company aims to replicate the hybrid solar-plus-storage model it implemented in Chile, now also applying it in Europe. The complexities of signing an offtake agreement for a co-located battery storage PPA were a key topic at the Renewables Procurement & Revenue Summit in London this week. One panellist stressed the importance of developers understanding the intricacies of co-location and the balance between risk and risk mitigation in hybrid projects.
