At its Meitingen site, SGL Carbon has implemented two key projects to further develop its industrial infrastructure. In a festive ceremony last Thursday, site manager Alexander Miehling and Andreas Klein, CEO of SGL Carbon, together with representatives from politics, business, and the region, commissioned a photovoltaic plant and laid the foundation stone for a new air separation plant.
The photovoltaic system was built on an area of approximately three hectares on the factory grounds. It has a capacity of around 4.4 megawatts peak and generates about 4.6 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year. The entire amount of electricity is used on-site. As a result, the plant will cover approximately ten percent of Meitingen’s electricity needs in the future. At the same time, it will save about 1,670 tons of CO₂annually.
With the laying of the cornerstone for the air separation plant as part of the event on May 21, 2026, SGL Carbon is expanding its self-supply of industrial gases. The plant is being built in collaboration with an international gas and engineering company. It is intended to ensure the on-site supply of production gases and reduce dependence on external deliveries. At the same time, the need for truck transport will decrease. This will relieve pressure on the infrastructure surrounding the site.
Both projects are key development initiatives aimed at gradually transforming the Meitingen site into an industrial park for the region. New energy and infrastructure projects play a central role in this effort.
Alexander Miehling, Site Manager in Meitingen, says, “With the photovoltaic system and the new air separation plant, we are strengthening the foundation for reliable and efficient production. At the same time, we are improving the energy supply and reducing emissions at the site.”
Andreas Klein, the CEO of SGL Carbon, brought good news to Meitingen: “Yesterday, May 20, 2026, the shareholders approved the proposal by SGL Carbon SE to relocate the company headquarters of SGL Carbon SE to Meitingen. This brings our administration closer to production and underscores the importance of the Meitingen site.”
Dr. Fabian Mehring, Bavarian Minister of State for Digital Affairs, says, “SGL Carbon has been the industrial heart of our region for decades. I am therefore all the more pleased that the plant in Meitingen will serve as the global headquarters for SGL’s 29 locations. The establishment of an Airbus production unit on the site is another significant milestone that sets the course for the future of the Meitingen site. This is complemented by the ceremonial commissioning of one of Germany’s largest surplus solar power plants. An additional 4.6 gigawatts of solar power per year will take the plant to a new level of supply security and energy independence. This is how a bright future is being built in Meitingen, combining industrial tradition with modern innovation!”
Bavarian Minister of State for European Affairs and International Relations Eric Beißwenger says, “The future is being built here! SGL Carbon impressively demonstrates how industrial transformation succeeds: sustainability and innovation drive competitiveness. When it comes to future technologies such as semiconductors, aerospace, batteries, or hydrogen, the rule is clear: whoever masters materials is at the helm of the transformation. SGL Carbon is a perfect example of what the future ‘Made in Bavaria’ could look like.”
In addition to the commissioning of the photovoltaic system and the laying of the cornerstone for the air separation plant, a new fire station was also inaugurated.
