The Government of Alberta is providing $383,200 to the County of Newell for a solar-powered micro-generation system at the county’s administration and shop facilities through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Municipal Electricity Generation Program.
The ground-mounted solar photovoltaic system will generate about 558,000 watts of electricity, enough to offset power use at the county’s main administrative complex.
With a total project budget of just under $1 million, this investment represents a significant step toward reducing operating costs and improving long-term energy sustainability for the County.
Construction is expected to begin in the summer or fall of 2026.
County of Newell Reeve Arno Doerksen said the project is an investment in the county’s future, noting it will generate its own electricity and reduce long-term energy costs.
Once operational, the system will supply renewable energy directly to county facilities, helping stabilize energy expenses and reduce reliance on external power sources.
The Municipal Electricity Generation Program provides funding to Alberta municipalities to install on-site electricity generation systems aimed at reducing energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions while improving long-term resilience.
Trina Innes, executive director of the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, said the County of Newell is demonstrating leadership in municipal energy action that benefits both operations and residents, calling the project an example of improved community resilience.
