China’s solar power installations saw a significant decline in April compared to the same month last year, according to data from the country’s National Energy Administration as cited by Bloomberg. Developers added just 9.52 gigawatts of new capacity, a sharp drop from the 45 GW installed in April 2025, when companies rushed to complete projects before a major policy change in the pricing mechanism for solar power output.
The domestic solar market has been adjusting throughout this year, with monthly additions falling below previous years’ levels. In the first three months of 2026, China added 41.4 GW of solar capacity, a 31% decrease from the same period in 2025. March additions slumped by 56% year-on-year to 8.9 GW, while the April figure of 9.5 GW marked an improvement from March but remained far below the boom levels of April 2025.
In contrast, Chinese exports of solar equipment and components surged in March and continued to rise in subsequent weeks. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) reported last week that solar cell production fell by 25.6% year-on-year in April, reflecting weaker domestic installations and a slight pullback in exports after the March surge. CREA analysts noted that the decline indicates the manufacturing sector is adjusting after last year’s exceptionally rapid deployment boom.
Despite the end of China’s export tax refunds on April 1, which led analysts to expect higher product prices could slow shipments, exports of solar cells and panels continued to surge in April. Demand in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Europe has soared amid the oil and gas crisis, driving the export growth.
