KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Bhd’s unit Gamuda Renewable Pte Ltd has expanded its Australian renewable energy portfolio through the acquisition of a stake in the Hazelwood North Solar Farm and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Victoria.
Located in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, the project will combine up to 450 megawatts (MW) of solar generation with a four-hour, 1,800 megawatt-hour battery storage system across a 1,100-hectare site.
Once operational, it is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 150,000 homes.
The transaction remains subject to approval from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board.
Construction is slated to begin in 2028, with commercial operations targeted for 2030.
The project is also expected to create about 450 local construction jobs.
The acquisition increases Gamuda Renewables’ Australian portfolio to three assets across the National Electricity Market and supports its ambition of building 5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy assets under development, construction and operation by 2031.
Gamuda said it is also exploring the development of a co-located data centre at the site together with project developer Manthos Investments Pte Ltd.
The proposed facility would be powered directly by the project’s renewable energy generation and battery storage infrastructure, creating a model that integrates clean energy with growing digital infrastructure demand.
Gamuda Australia chief strategy and development officer Jarred Hardman said the project reflects the growing convergence between renewable energy and data centre infrastructure, while supporting Victoria’s clean energy transition goals.
The acquisition follows Gamuda Renewables’ recent success under Australia’s Capacity Investment Scheme, where its Weasel Solar Farm and Cellars Hill Wind Farm projects in Tasmania were selected for the federal government’s revenue underwriting programme.
