COXSACKIE — Construction on an over 1,600-acre solar farm project in Coxsackie and Athens is set to begin later this summer.
The solar farm is slated to be built on 1,638 acres of land privately leased by the developer, which spans the towns of Coxsackie and Athens. Once completed, the solar panels will be connected to the electric grid, supplying energy to the grid.
Coxsackie Town Supervisor Richard Hanse said he has been told by developer D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) representatives that the construction will begin this summer.
“They came basically to tell us where they are in the project,” Hanse said Wednesday. “They will begin the construction in August, and that will be mainly entry and access points. Tree-clearing is expected to begin in the fall, when it’s allowed. The DEC has outlined times to knock trees down because of the wildlife that lives there.”
The solar farm will be partially located in an area within the habitat of a large number of Indiana and northern long-eared bats. Both bat species are on the state endangered list. The bats are set to migrate back to the area between April and May.
The planned solar site is being developed by DESRI, which took over the project in 2022 from Hudson Energy Developments and Amber Infrastructure. DESRI, a New York City-based company, focuses on the development of renewable energy projects, according to the company’s website.
The project is expected to generate 175,000 megawatt-hours of renewable energy from the sun, which will power about 21,000 homes in Greene County, according to a project description on the Hudson Energy Development website.
The solar farm, which has been in the works for a decade, has passed the permitting processes in Coxsackie and Athens, and Hanse said he does not have strong opinions about it.
“Actually, I am rather neutral about it,” Hanse said. “We knew this was coming. There’s been good communication between us. They have their road-use agreements. They have funded an escrow account for that and will be funding another for the cost of engineering and legal work. They’ve covered these costs so the town is not going to pay for it. It’s been a long time, (the project’s) been in the works since 2016, and it’s been a long time coming.”
The solar farm will not obstruct the scenic views of the area, Hanse added.
“It should not make life drastically different because of the way the project is working in a low spot of terrain, so it should not be extremely noticeable,” Hanse said.
Athens Town Supervisor Michael Pirrone did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday.
