Reliance targets 120 GWh of annual BESS and cell manufacturing capacity; first phase to start production this year – pv magazine India

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) plans to expand its battery energy storage system (BESS) and cell manufacturing capacity to 120 GWh per year. The first phase of its 40 GWh annual BESS and cell gigafactory is on track for commissioning this year, with all equipment already delivered to the site.
Speaking at the company’s 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh D. Ambani, said Reliance has committed to scaling the facility to 120 GWh of annual capacity. Once fully commissioned, the factory is expected to make Reliance one of the world’s largest manufacturers of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
Under its New Energy business, RIL is developing an end-to-end clean energy ecosystem at the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The complex includes gigafactories for end-to-end integrated solar value chain, fuel cell systems, green hydrogen production equipment, energy storage systems and battery cells, and power electronics. Spread across 5,000 acres, it is designed as one of the world’s most integrated clean energy manufacturing hubs.
According to Ambani, the complex is transitioning from construction to commissioning in FY26. Solar PV cell and module manufacturing lines have already been commissioned and are operational. Nearly 1 GW of heterojunction technology (HJT) modules has been produced, delivering around 2% higher energy yield, 15% better temperature performance, and 25% lower degradation compared with conventional modules.
Reliance has also secured Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) certification for its HJT technology, becoming the first company in India to achieve ALMM listing for this advanced cell type. The listed cell manufacturing capacity includes 210 mm × 105 mm cell formats featuring zero-busbar designs. The cells are rated at efficiencies of up to 25.6%, with power outputs ranging from 5.28 W to 5.66 W.
“We are building towards 20 GW per annum of fully integrated capacity – from polysilicon to ingots, wafers, cells, modules, and glass. Every step in this chain is a step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat [self-reliant India],” Ambani said.
RIL’s investments across both upstream and downstream industries align with its vision of building a fully integrated, end-to-end renewable energy ecosystem.
In the arid Kutch region, the Group is developing a renewable energy hub across 5,50,000 acres to deliver round-the-clock power at gigawatt scale, combining solar and battery storage systems.
“This platform will become one of the lowest-cost sources of round-the-clock green power anywhere in the world. Once fully operationalised, the integrated hub will generate over 40 billion units of green electricity every year, which is approximately 3% of India’s annual electricity requirement,” said Ambani.
The peak installation rate target at the RE hub is 55 MWp of solar modules and 150 MWh of battery containers per day.
Further, the dedicated Kutch-to-Jamnagar transmission corridor is under construction with EPC contracts awarded.
