Energy
India added almost 38 gigawatt (GW) to its solar energy capacity in 2025, according to a recent analysis of the global energy sector by think tank Ember. As our infographic shows, this means that, for the first time, India installed more solar capacity than the United States last year. India’s capacity additions increased by 54 percent in 2025 compared to 2024, where it reached 24.5 GW.
According to Ember, India achieved the third-largest increase in solar generation in 2025: +53 TWh, or a 37 percent growth compared to the previous year. This is in part due to an initiative launched in 2024 which offers subsidies of up to 40 percent of the cost to households to install rooftop solar panels. Furthermore, while India’s power demand grew by 49 TWh last year, the country’s renewable energy generation represented double that amount (98 TWh in total). This follows a global trend: in 2025, clean power sources fully covered the world’s growing electricity demand.
Description
This infographic shows the yearly added solar capacity in India and the United States between 2021 and 2025, in GW.
