Coal India Limited (CIL), a state-owned coal producer, has won a INR28.3 billion (US$296 million) contract to construct a 600MW solar photovoltaic facility at the Jalaun Solar Park in Uttar Pradesh, India. The award came from public sector utility Bundelkhand Saur Urja Limited (BSUL), as disclosed in a regulatory filing.
The solar installation will be built in two equal stages, each with a capacity of 300MW. Upon commissioning, the power generated will be sold at a fixed rate of INR2.73 (US$0.02) per kilowatt-hour. Prior to starting construction, CIL must satisfy the terms of the Letter of Award and finalize the power purchase agreement. Once the PPA is in place, CIL will have 18 months to finish the project.
This initiative is part of the broader Jalaun Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park located in Orai, Uttar Pradesh, which is designed to have a total solar capacity of 1,200MW. BSUL, a joint venture subsidiary of state-owned hydropower firm NHPC and the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), is developing the park. The entire solar park is anticipated to produce roughly 2,400GWh of electricity each year after full completion.
The contract furthers CIL’s push into renewable energy, complementing its primary coal mining business. In April 2026, CIL also granted an engineering, procurement, and construction contract to Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy for an 875MW solar project at the 2GW Pugal solar park in Rajasthan, with a value of about INR34.9 billion (US$376.8 million). Furthermore, in March, the company authorized a corporate guarantee of INR13.6 billion (US$144 million) for its subsidiary, CIL Rajasthan Akshay Urja Limited, to aid debt financing for an 875MW solar PV project in Rajasthan.
