The largest floating photovoltaic plant in Africa has started operating in Morocco. The 13 MW floating PV plant uses flexible anchoring and flotation systems to remain stable across wide seasonal variations.
Installed on the Oued Rmel Dam reservoir, near Ksar Sghir, in northern Morocco, close to the Tanger Med port complex, the facility is designed to supply electricity to the industrial and port operations of Tanger Med.
The project was delivered to Tanger Med Utilities following a tender issued in 2023. The installation comprises three floating PV islands covering a total surface area of 72,870 m².
The plant is located on a reservoir in a mountain valley where water levels vary between 35 m and 79 m, a 44 m fluctuation range. This required tailored design solutions for the flotation and anchoring systems.
As the reservoir also contributes to local freshwater supply, the project includes water quality monitoring systems to comply with environmental requirements.
H2air PX, the construction subsidiary of French H2air Group, led project coordination and engineering, including integration of PV modules, inverters and the electrical substation.
The plant’s construction was carried out by a consortium comprising EnergyDesign, responsible for civil engineering, site access and equipment installation; Seaflex, which supplied anchoring and mooring systems adapted to floating applications; and Profloating, provider of the floating PV structure.
Floating solar energy uses water surfaces to generate renewable power, conserving land and reducing environmental impact. The cooling effect of water enhances solar panel efficiency, contributing to sustainable development and water conservation.
