Spanish independent power producer Grenergy has kicked off a reverse auction in Chile to market 1.5 terawatt-hours of yearly electricity supply underpinned by its solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system portfolio.
The procurement process, run via the company’s subsidiary GR Power, is directed at power generators, retailers, and large-scale energy users in search of long-term renewable electricity agreements.
The package includes 960 gigawatt-hours per year of battery-stored power for nighttime use and 540 gigawatt-hours per year of solar PV output for daytime supply. The electricity will come from Grenergy’s solar and storage installations in northern and central Chile, with deliveries slated to commence between the second and third quarters of 2028.
Bidders can compete for the full volume or in increments of 20 gigawatt-hour contract blocks, with agreement lengths spanning six to 15 years. The application window is now live on the Match Energia marketplace. Inquiries can be submitted until 7 July, and registration ends on 22 July.
This represents the third occasion Grenergy has conducted its own competitive tender for renewable energy, after its inaugural such auction in Latin America in 2022.
The initiative follows the company’s growing hybrid renewable footprint in Chile. Grenergy’s Oasis de Atacama platform currently comprises 2.5 gigawatts of solar PV and 14 gigawatt-hours of energy storage, while the Oasis Central project will contribute an additional 1.4 gigawatts of solar capacity and 5.1 gigawatt-hours of energy storage in central Chile.
Recently, the IPP raised its planned investment through 2028 to 3.7 billion euros (4.2 billion U.S. dollars), concentrating on standalone battery energy storage and hybrid solar-plus-storage ventures in Europe and Chile. The updated plan allocated 1.5 billion euros for 2028, with Europe and Chile each representing roughly 45 percent of total planned investment, while the U.S. accounted for about 5 percent.
The Madrid-headquartered company has established a goal of 5 gigawatts of gross installed solar capacity by 2026, along with ambitions to grow its energy storage portfolio to 4.1 gigawatt-hours, propelled by hybrid solar-plus-storage projects across Europe and the Americas.
Across its worldwide pipeline and assets in various development stages, Grenergy reports approximately 12 gigawatts of solar capacity.
