Avangrid, a company within the Iberdrola Group, has started installing panels at the Oregon Trail Solar project in Gilliam County, Oregon, according to a July 8, 2026, announcement reported by Kelly Pickerel. The 57-megawatt energy project currently supports 200 local union jobs. Avangrid’s chief executive, Jose Antonio Miranda, stated that beginning panel installation represents meaningful progress in delivering new energy infrastructure in Oregon, and that projects like Oregon Trail are creating jobs, supporting local communities, and helping meet rising electricity demand across the region.
Once completed next year, the Oregon Trail Solar facility will contain over 100,000 solar panels and generate enough electricity to power approximately 10,000 U.S. homes annually. Beyond job creation, Avangrid expects the project to generate $6 million in combined payments in lieu of taxes and property taxes for Gilliam County over its lifetime, funds that will support public services such as schools and infrastructure.
The Oregon Trail site is located next to Avangrid’s operating Pachwaywit Fields solar project and its recently announced Shutler Energy Storage project. Avangrid currently operates more than 2.5 gigawatts of capacity in Oregon, which includes the Daybreak Solar and Bakeoven Solar facilities in Wasco County and the Tower Solar project in Morrow County.
