Colombia Brings 360-MWp Puerta de Oro Solar Park Into Commercial Operation – ColombiaOne.com


Colombia has brought the Puerta de Oro Solar Park into commercial operation, adding 360 megawatt-peak (MWp) of clean energy capacity to the National Interconnected System. Developed by Patria Investments between the municipalities of Guaduas and Chaguaní in the department of Cundinamarca, the facility ranks among the largest photovoltaic projects in Colombia and Latin America.
According to the developer, the park can generate enough electricity to match the annual consumption of about 450,000 households. The project expands Colombia’s renewable generation capacity as the country continues diversifying an electricity system that still relies primarily on hydropower.
Patria Investments completed construction, technical testing, and regulatory requirements before the project entered commercial operation. Electricity from the facility now flows into the National Interconnected System, which supplies power to most of Colombia. The company said the project will also generate tax revenue for the municipalities of Guaduas and Chaguaní while supporting long-term operation and maintenance jobs in the region.
The solar facility features an installed capacity of 360 MWp (megawatt-peak)—the standard industry metric quantifying a photovoltaic system’s maximum electrical output under standardized testing conditions. This peak rating reflects ideal operating variables, such as peak solar irradiance and optimal cell temperature, rather than continuous, real-world daily yields.
Because actual generation fluctuates alongside shifting weather patterns and solar angles, the MWp metric serves as a standardized baseline for engineers, utilities, and investors to benchmark project performance. Mechanistically, the photovoltaic modules convert sunlight directly into direct current (DC) electricity without fuel; step-up transformers then condition this power for integration into the high-voltage national transmission network.
Colombia’s National Interconnected System has an installed generation capacity of about 21.5 gigawatts (21,500 megawatts). In that context, Puerta de Oro’s 360 MWp represents less than 2% of the country’s total installed capacity. Even so, projects of this scale help diversify an electricity system where hydropower continues to dominate generation, reducing dependence on reservoirs during prolonged dry periods associated with climate variability and El Niño.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy has identified renewable energy as a strategic component of Colombia’s long-term electricity planning. The start of operations at Puerta de Oro follows several large photovoltaic projects that have entered service in recent years and comes days after the government issued the country’s first geothermal exploration permit. That authorization allows technical studies to determine whether underground heat resources near the border of Caldas and Antioquia can support future electricity generation.
Solar, wind and geothermal technologies play different roles within Colombia’s energy matrix. Solar facilities generate electricity during daylight hours, while wind farms produce power when wind conditions allow. Should exploration confirm commercially viable reservoirs, geothermal facilities can generate baseload electricity continuously by tapping into thermal energy stored beneath the Earth’s crust. Together, these renewable sources complement Colombia’s hydroelectric plants rather than replace them, helping diversify electricity production as demand grows and weather conditions become more variable.
Although Puerta de Oro alone represents a modest addition to Colombia’s installed generating capacity, its entry into commercial operation reflects the steady expansion of utility-scale renewable energy projects across the country. Each new solar, wind or geothermal development adds another source of electricity to the national grid, broadening the mix of technologies available to support Colombia’s future energy supply.
