Switzerland had installed 338,270 photovoltaic systems with a combined capacity of 9,498.6 MW at the end of 2025, according to new figures released by local association Swissolar.
The Swiss photovoltaic market experienced a significant decline in demand last year, with new PV capacity additions falling from 1.8 GW in 2024 to 1.33 GW in 2025, according to the statistics.
Installed photovoltaic systems generated nearly 8 TWh of electricity in Switzerland in 2025, representing a 33.3% increase compared with 2024, when solar power covered 13.71% of the country’s electricity consumption.
The report also provides a breakdown of newly installed systems by market segment. Of the 37,257 new installations, 25,562 were located on single-family homes. These systems had an average capacity of 13.4 kW, for a combined total of 342.9 MW during the year.
Around 5,800 PV systems were installed on multi-family buildings, adding 204.4 MW of capacity. These systems had an average size of 35.4 kW.
The commercial and industrial sector accounted for the largest share of new capacity additions, with 547 MW installed. Agricultural buildings contributed around 110 MW, while public-sector buildings added 65.6 MW. Ground-mounted PV systems remained a relatively small segment of the Swiss market, with 50 new installations totaling 33.3 MW.
The statistics also analyzed installations by system size. The largest number of new systems fell within the 10 kW to 20 kW range. However, installations between 100 kW and 1 MW accounted for the largest share of newly added capacity.
The battery storage market followed a different trajectory, with demand increasing significantly between 2024 and 2025. The volume of lithium-ion storage capacity sold rose from 287,400 kWh to 490,070 kWh year on year, representing a 70% increase.
In 2025, Switzerland added 27,775 new storage systems with a combined capacity of around 485,000 kWh. The country’s total installed lithium-ion storage capacity increased from 0.884 GWh to 1.38 GWh over the course of the year. This capacity is distributed across nearly 93,500 storage systems.
The single-family home segment accounted for the largest share of newly added storage capacity. A total of 24,345 new systems were installed in this category, with a combined capacity of 309,630 kWh and an average storage size of 12.7 kWh.
Swissolar attributed the slowdown in PV deployment to uncertainty in the energy market and energy policy environment.
“This indicates a shift in the electricity market and uncertainty regarding federal energy and electricity policy,” the association said. It marked the first annual decline in new PV installations since 2017.
The association said additional incentives and market mechanisms are needed to support self-consumption and local electricity models.
