The first Australian-assembled electric trucks built by Volvo Group Australia have rolled off the production line at the Volvo Trucks Wacol Plant Queensland, located 20.5 kilometres south of Brisbane’s CBD.
Supported with a $70 million investment by the Australian government delivered through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), the funding in part has subsidised the adoption of zero-emissions trucks.
The Volvo electric truck battery energy storage systems (BESS) use modular lithium-ion batteries of up to 540 kWh of total capacity and are ‘fuelled’ by high-power DC fast charging.
The Wacol facility has built more than 80,000 trucks for over 50 years and is the only facility globally where Volvo and Mack trucks are manufactured side-by-side.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said at a launch event on 8 July 2026 that the trucks show Australia has the resources to be a clean energy superpower.
“Projects like this show just what’s possible. Electric trucks built right here in Brisbane will keep Australia moving now and into the future,” Albanese said.
Volvo Group Executive Vice President and Volvo President Roger Alm said building electric trucks in Australia reflects Volvo Group’s confidence in Australian manufacturing.
“We are convinced that electric trucks will play a key role in the future of transport. Producing them in Australia will help drive the sustainability transformation, while bringing us even closer to our customers and their needs,” Alm said.
Linfox
Australian freight company Linfox is the first to deploy the Volvo trucks in its fleet, and has used electric trucks for more than a decade.
The company’s $50.1 million Heavy Truck Electrification Project has been supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) with $19.63 million and includes charging infrastructure as several of it’s transport hub sites.
Linfox Australia and New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Mark Mazurek said the electric Volvo truck is a prime example of what the industry can achieve in partnership with local manufacturers and government.
“These Australian made electric prime movers will ensure we continue to service our customers with a reliable fleet that is safe, secure, efficient and sustainable,” Mazurek said.
