Malaysia-based clean energy company Gentari has commissioned a 3.1 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2), expanding the use of renewable energy in the country’s transport infrastructure.
The solar project, developed through Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd, will supply renewable electricity to gateway@klia2 under a power purchase agreement. The retail and lifestyle complex is operated by Segi Astana Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between WCT Holdings Berhad and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), with retail operations managed by WCT Malls Management Sdn Bhd, Tnglobal reported.
According to Gentari, the installation supports Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the country’s broader decarbonisation objectives.
The project includes around 5,212 solar panels installed across approximately 10,500 square metres of rooftop and car park space. It is expected to generate about 4,277 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity annually while reducing carbon emissions by around 3,310 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year.
Gentari Group Chief Operating Officer and Country Head of Malaysia Shah Yang Razalli said the project demonstrates that renewable energy systems can be integrated into high-traffic airport facilities without affecting operations.
He added that the installation was completed in an active airport environment, highlighting the company’s ability to deliver renewable energy projects at operational sites while maintaining safety and business continuity.
The project also includes solar car park structures that provide shaded parking for passengers and airport staff while contributing to the airport’s sustainability goals.
The installation complements existing green mobility initiatives at KLIA2, including 12 electric vehicle charging points established to meet growing demand for EV charging at the airport.
Gentari said the solar power system is expected to provide greater energy cost stability and improve operational resilience as passenger numbers and vehicle traffic increase, particularly ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Retail Director of WCT Malls Management Sdn Bhd Allan Tay said the project strengthens the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability by integrating renewable energy into mall operations and supporting its long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
Gentari said the collaboration with Segi Astana reflects the growing adoption of on-site renewable energy solutions across Malaysia’s transport infrastructure as operators seek to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.
