JMK Research, an India-based cleantech research firm, stated that India commissioned 26 GW of solar and 3 GW of wind capacity in the first half of 2026. Solar deployment was nearly equal to 70% of the country’s total CY2025 additions and increased 43% over H1 2025. Wind capacity growth moved in the opposite direction, declining 16% year on year despite the sharp rise in solar installations. India’s overall RE capacity has reached approximately 288 GW by the end of H1 CY2026, with solar PV holding a share of around 56%. Of the new solar capacity, about 19 GW came from utility-scale portfolio and approximately 6.4 GW from rooftop systems. Off-grid and distributed installations contributed another 842.9 MW, with most rooftop growth linked to the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Gujarat led solar capacity additions with 7.6 GW, while Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu added 6.6 GW and 2.4 GW, respectively. For CY2026, JMK Research forecasts approximately 47 GW of total solar and wind capacity additions.
