The UK government has granted authorization for the development of the One Earth Solar Farm. This photovoltaic plant will have a capacity of 740 megawatts. This infrastructure is the second-largest project of its kind authorized to date in the region. The initiative is jointly led by PS Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, both entities integrated into Solar Energy UK.
In this regard, the new facility will contribute more than 1% of the national target set out in the Clean Energy Action Plan 2030. This plan envisages reaching a solar capacity of between 54 and 57 gigawatts. Consequently, the energy input from this complex will optimize domestic electricity supply. Likewise, the project will mitigate the impact of price fluctuations in international natural gas markets.
It should be noted that this approval adds to the recent authorizations for the Peartree solar farm and the Dean Moor power plant. The former is located north of Hull with 320 megawatts, while the latter will contribute 150 megawatts in Cumbria. Together, these three complexes will supply electricity equivalent to the consumption of 330,000 UK households. Currently, the largest installation with permission granted remains Springwell Solar Farm, with a capacity of 800 megawatts.
Furthermore, industry data reflect sustained growth in photovoltaic technology in the United Kingdom. Current generation capacity is around 26 gigawatts distributed across the country. More than 1.7 million households have residential solar panels installed. Additionally, battery storage and solar generation currently support around 20,000 direct jobs.
Finally, according to sector financial statements, the industry contributes nearly £1.9 billion annually to gross value added. Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of Solar Energy UK, has stated that large-scale solar represents a low-cost, domestically produced alternative. According to the executive, large plants maximize economies of scale and stabilize the economy against international geopolitical tensions. Lastly, projections for 2035 estimate that the sector will generate 43,000 jobs.
