A herd of 100 sheep has started controlling the vegetation on a 27-hectare solar farm of Volkswagen in Poznań, Poland, replacing lawnmowers and supporting studies on biodiversity, soil, microclimate, and animal welfare.

The animals will graze on the land throughout the season, until autumn, under the supervision of local farmers.
The sheep belong to Justyna Nowak-Gajek. According to the project information, the herd quickly adapted to the technological environment and began to split into small groups to graze among the structures of the solar farm.

On days of high solar radiation, the infrastructure has the technical capacity to supply up to 100% of the processes of the Volkswagen factory. Considering the total consumption of the unit, the park provides a quarter of the energy used.
The industrial plant produces components and different commercial vehicles, including the electric van e-Crafter. Renewable generation is part of the measures adopted to reduce the environmental impact of production.
The Poznań University of Life Sciences participates in the project through researcher Joanna Składanowska-Baryza. A scientific team continuously monitors the effects of the animals’ presence on the ecosystem around the facility.
The fieldwork examines changes in soil quality, vegetation composition, and the microclimate formed under the solar structures. Researchers also analyze animal welfare during the grazing period.
The natural management of vegetation reduces operational emissions related to mechanical maintenance. Grazing also promotes the formation of habitats for insects and other animals present on site.
The results will serve as a basis to evaluate the possibility of globally standardizing this combination of solar energy generation, vegetation control, agricultural activity, and scientific monitoring of biodiversity.
