Enphase launches GaN-powered IQ9N microinverter for rooftop solar markets – pv magazine Australia

United States-based power electronics manufacturer Enphase Energy has introduced it IQ9N microinverter for Australian and New Zealand residential applications, utilising gallium nitride (GaN) technology to deliver 427 VA of continuous output and up to 97.95% peak efficiency.
“Australia is one of the world’s most advanced rooftop solar markets and a natural next step in the global expansion of IQ9N microinverters,” said Ken Fong, senior vice president and general manager for Americas and Asia Pacific at Enphase.
“IQ9N Microinverters combine our proven distributed architecture with GaN technology in a compact form factor for residential solar.”
Enphase said by replacing traditional silicon components with GaN, the new microinverter achieves faster switching speeds, reduced power loss, and improved thermal management to support high-powered modern PV modules.
The IQ9N microinverter is designed to pair with high-output residential solar panels, supporting up to 16 A of continuous input DC current with a maximum short-circuit current of 25 A. Operating within a maximum input voltage of 60 V and a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) voltage window of 28 V to 45 V, the microinverter delivers a peak and maximum continuous AC output power of 427 VA at 240 V split-phase, and 405 VA when configured for 208 V single-phase grids.
“IQ9N microinverters optimise energy from each panel across partial shading, complex roof layouts, and high-temperature conditions, making them well suited to the Australian climate,” the company said.
Enphase said the integration of GaN technology allows the unit to maintain a 97.5% CEC weighted efficiency and up to 97.95% peak efficiency. This semiconductor platform lowers internal conduction losses, enabling the device to run cooler across seasonal temperature variations. It operates via natural convection cooling across an ambient temperature range of –40°C to 65°C, housed in a double-insulated, corrosion-resistant polymeric enclosure.
For residential retrofits and system scaling, the IQ9N is backward compatible with existing IQ7 and IQ8 series microinverters on the same IQ Gateway or IQ Combiner, provided system capacity balances align with storage parameters. When integrated alongside IQ Batteries, the combined maximum continuous output of the microinverter array must not exceed 150% of the battery system’s rated power without implementing automated PV shedding.
The design utilises integrated Stäubli MC4 connectors and standard Enphase AC cabling to streamline field installation.
The IQ9N microinverter is backed by a 25-year limited warranty.
