The influx of data centers, as well as crypto-mining facilities and semi-conductor plants into New York state, has put exponential demand on the state’s power grid.
According to the New York Independent System Operator, New York doesn’t have enough power currently to meet expected future demand.
But there is an agency whose job it is to think ahead and advance New York’s energy system and economy — the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority, or NYSDERDA.
One example of NYSERDA’s work: Over the last few years, it’s ensured that enough solar power is being built in the state to help reduce the total costs of operating the power grid when electricity use is at its highest, during summer heat waves. In 2025, solar saved New Yorkers approximately $90 million.
Doreen Harris, president and CEO of NYSERDA, joined Capital Tonight’s Susan Arbetter to discuss the authority’s annual Accomplishments Report, as well as its strategic outlook.
