The Chinese Academy of Sciences, a China-based research institution, has developed a perovskite-organic tandem solar cell with record efficiency. The device has achieved a steady-state power conversion efficiency of 28.04%, setting a world record for this cell category. Li Yongfang and Meng Lei led the research team at the academy’s Institute of Chemistry. The researchers introduced a photo-convertible additive molecule while developing the tandem solar cell device. The team’s related study was published online in the international academic journal Nature on Monday. The cell retained 90% of its initial efficiency after 625 hours under continuous illumination testing. Its multilayer structure separates sunlight absorption by wavelength, helping the device exceed single-junction solar cell efficiency limits. The lightweight and flexible cell has potential applications in buildings, wearable devices, satellites, aerospace systems and future deep-space exploration.
