German solar energy research institute ISC Konstanz has appointed Dr Gerhard Mathiak as head of its module department, according to an announcement. The position became vacant after Andreas Halm left the role last year.
Mathiak previously served as principal researcher and programme lead for PV reliability and performance at the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA). Since November 2024, he has worked as a solar PV consultant. His career also includes positions at TUV Rheinland, Q-Cells, and Evergreen Solar. Mathiak indicated that he looks forward to collaborating with industry partners on ISC Konstanz’s application-oriented PV research.
He commented that photovoltaics is evolving rapidly and that he is eager to help bring cutting-edge module technologies from research to industrial application worldwide. Mathiak noted that ISC Konstanz has an excellent international reputation for applied photovoltaic research and that he is particularly interested in working with industry partners to accelerate the transfer of new technologies to production, thereby supporting the energy transition.
His remarks align with ISC Konstanz’s goal of combining scientific excellence with practical industrial implementation. Since last May, the institute has partnered with US solar cell manufacturer Suniva and Indian renewable energy company Celloraa Energy to develop solar cell production lines.
The appointment is also significant because ISC Konstanz announced earlier this year that it is advancing its own cell and module pilot production line, which is expected to become operational by the third quarter of this year.
Dr Kristian Peter, chairman of the board of ISC Konstanz, stated that the new laboratory gives the institute one of the most advanced research infrastructures in Europe. He added that the institute is strengthening its team with people who understand both research and industrial implementation, and that Mathiak brings that type of experience.
The appointment ends the interim leadership of the module department by Dr Peter and Tobias Messmer, who serves as deputy department head. ISC Konstanz thanked both for their outstanding commitment during the transitional period before Mathiak’s appointment.
