Coal India Limited (CIL) has received a commissioning certificate from the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) for 200 MW of solar power capacity under its 300 MW solar project at Khavda, Gujarat. The certificate is dated July 15, 2026.
The commissioning marks the completion of two-thirds of the project’s planned capacity and represents another addition to Coal India’s renewable energy portfolio as the company expands beyond its core coal mining business.
Project status
The Khavda project has a total planned capacity of 300 MW. With the commissioning of 200 MW, the remaining 100 MW is expected to be commissioned at a later date.
Located in Gujarat’s Khavda renewable energy region, the project forms part of Coal India’s efforts to increase its presence in the non-fossil fuel segment and participate in the country’s growing renewable energy sector.
Renewable diversification
Coal India, a Maharatna public sector undertaking and the world’s largest coal mining company, has outlined plans in recent years to diversify its business through investments in clean energy and associated infrastructure.
The commissioning of the Khavda capacity adds to the company’s renewable energy assets and aligns with its stated objective of expanding its non-fossil fuel portfolio while supporting broader decarbonisation efforts.
Khavda has emerged as one of India’s largest renewable energy hubs, attracting investments from multiple public and private sector entities across solar generation and transmission infrastructure.
The balance 100 MW of Coal India’s solar project is expected to be commissioned in due course.
