WILSON, Ark. — Ground was broken yesterday for what will be the largest solar project in the United States. The Cypress Creek Energy and Google project is located in Wilson in Mississippi County.
The project will become the Steel River Energy Center.
The first two phases of the project will deliver solar generation and battery storage to the Mississippi County grid to help support steel mills and other industries in the region.
Much of the project’s structural steel will come from Mississippi County, including steel produced at U.S. Steel’s Big River Steel facility in Osceola.
The Steel River Energy Center is expected to create approximately 700 construction jobs per phase and generate an estimated $300 million in local tax revenue over the life of the project.
Google will use energy generated from the project to help power its proposed West Memphis communications center.
Google and Cypress Creek Energy are also committing a combined $8 million to support local communities. The investment includes energy affordability initiatives, school projects and other community programs in Mississippi County.
