TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto invited Chinese companies to invest in the development of solar power plants with a total capacity of 100 gigawatts in Indonesia.
Hartarto extended the invitation during a bilateral meeting with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao in Shanghai on Friday evening.
The massive 100 GW solar target was initiated by President Prabowo Subianto to support Indonesia’s energy transition and industrial downstreaming push, with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources aiming for full completion by 2029.
“Indonesia appreciates China’s investment in the development of the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant. The project demonstrates the massive potential for Indonesia-China cooperation in supporting the energy transition, developing clean energy, and achieving emission reduction targets,” Hartarto said in a statement on Saturday.
He noted that the solar panel industry currently operating in Indonesia can still be further strengthened and expanded with the aim of building a more comprehensive and integrated domestic supply chain for the solar power industry.
Beyond the energy sector, Hartarto highlighted that China remains Indonesia’s largest trading partner. In 2025, bilateral trade between the two countries reached US$154.6 billion, maintaining an average annual growth rate of 7.24 percent over the 2021 to 2025 period.
In terms of investment, China also ranks among Indonesia’s top three sources of foreign direct investment (FDI). In 2025, Chinese investment reached nearly US$8.1 billion, accounting for roughly 13 percent of total FDI, primarily channeled into manufacturing, trade, energy, property, and transportation and warehousing sectors.
During the meeting, both parties also discussed strengthening cooperation through the Two Countries Twin Parks (TCTP) framework, expanding market access to balance bilateral trade, and securing support for hosting the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Secretariat in Indonesia.
Ahead of the APEC 2026 summit in China, Hartarto conveyed Indonesia’s support for China’s chairmanship. He expressed hope that both nations would begin identifying priority projects that could be officially announced during the upcoming bilateral leaders’ meeting.
