Fluence will supply its Smartstack storage system and EPC services for Avantus's solar-plus-storage Rexford 2 project in California, sized at 200 MW and 800 megawatt-hours, targeting commercial operation by late 2028.
Fluence Energy, an energy storage systems provider listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker FLNC, has announced an agreement with developer Avantus to supply its Smartstack system and provide turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the Rexford 2 project. Located in Tulare County, California, the project will pair a solar facility with a 200 MW / 800 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system. Other developers have recently pursued similar solar-plus-storage combinations, such as the hybrid project refinanced by ReNew and Mitsui in India. Once operational, Rexford 2 is expected to deliver firm, on-demand capacity to the California grid, enough, according to Fluence, to power 84,000 Southern California homes.
Fluence will deploy a version of its Smartstack system with a four-hour discharge duration, incorporating U.S. domestic content. The company will draw on its network of partner manufacturing facilities in Utah, South Carolina and Texas, where battery cells, modules, enclosures and thermal management systems are produced. Relying on this U.S.-based production network is intended, according to Fluence, to support the continued advancement of a domestic energy storage industry. Other storage technologies are also attracting investment to expand capacity, such as the Vouglans-Saut-Mortier pumped storage scheme in France.
John Zahurancik, Chief Customer Success Officer at Fluence, said that combining the company’s end-to-end EPC capabilities with its U.S.-built Smartstack solution would streamline deployment for Avantus. Tony Frontino, Executive Vice President of Strategic Sourcing and Asset Management at Avantus, said the partnership with Fluence would strengthen the grid, build domestic supply chains and bring needed energy capacity to California.
According to Fluence, Rexford 2 is expected to generate more than 500 union jobs at peak construction, along with permanent local operations roles. The company also presents the project as a source of hundreds of millions of dollars in local tax revenue for Tulare County, intended to support public services and infrastructure.
Rexford 2 will be built on previously disturbed land, which Fluence says would limit the construction’s environmental impact. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with commercial operation targeted for late 2028. The project adds to the portfolio of storage systems deployed by Fluence in the California market, one of the largest battery storage markets in the United States.
