India’s electricity requirements are increasing at a fast pace and the major year-on-year rise in demand cannot be seen only as a challenge, but also as an opportunity, especially for the solar energy sector.
According to government estimates, the country’s peak power demand could reach around 300 GW next year, opening up more opportunities for renewable energy to meet the growing requirement. Against this backdrop, Joint Solar, a trusted name in solar PV module manufacturing, expects the rise in electricity consumption to bring more attention to solar solutions among households, businesses and industries.
While the solar sector is likely to see greater opportunities across different markets, Joint Solar notes that factors such as growing economic activity, urbanisation and the increasing use of electricity across different sectors are also changing the country’s energy requirements. The changing scenario comes at a time when solar has already become an important part of India’s renewable energy capacity. As electricity demand increases, the need to add generation capacity while meeting the country’s clean energy goals is expected to bring further opportunities for the sector.
According to Joint Solar, residential, commercial and industrial consumers are also becoming more aware of the role solar can play in meeting part of their electricity requirements. The company expects this change to support demand for solar products in established markets as well as smaller cities.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Vinod Sharma, Director, Joint Solar said, “India’s power requirements are growing and this creates a larger opportunity for solar energy. The sector has expanded considerably over the years, but there is still a large market that remains to be covered. As more people and businesses understand the benefits of solar, we expect adoption to increase further across different parts of the country.”
He added that growing electricity demand will also increase expectations from solar manufacturers. “The focus cannot be on capacity alone. Customers are looking at performance, reliability and how a solar system works over a longer period. Manufacturers will have to keep these requirements in mind as the market grows,” said Mr. Sharma.
Mr. Sharma added that India’s growing electricity needs present an opportunity for the solar industry to reach a much wider section of consumers. “Solar is no longer limited to a particular type of customer or project. Interest is coming from different segments and locations. The industry now has the opportunity to build on this momentum and make solar accessible to many more consumers,” he said.
The changing pattern of electricity consumption is also creating opportunities beyond large cities, as per the company. Smaller towns and emerging markets are seeing greater awareness around solar, with consumers looking at ways to manage their electricity requirements over the long term.
Wider adoption in these markets will depend on factors such as awareness, access to dependable products and stronger distribution. Joint Solar has been working with its dealer network to understand local requirements and changing demand patterns across regions.
