Public open houses are set for today (Tuesday, July 21) and tomorrow (Wednesday, July 22) regarding Buffalo Grass Solar’s proposed 6-square-mile solar farm south of Matheson.
The open house schedule is:
● Simla, Tuesday, July 21, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Hope Community Center, 320 Pueblo Avenue
● Kiowa, Wednesday, July 22, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Elbert County Fairgrounds, 95 Ute Avenue

“These open houses will be an opportunity for the community to learn about the project through a presentation, visit with the Buffalo Grass team, and provide questions and comments,” a letter from MorningSky Power said. “Information will be on display, and light refreshments will be provided.”
Buffalo Grass Solar LLC, which is proposing the Buffalo Grass Solar Project in southeastern Elbert County, is a subsidiary of MorningSky Power, based in Asheville, North Carolina.
The northern edge of the project area is along County Road 50 at County Road 149, nine miles south of Matheson, and it stretches south with an outline like a jigsaw-puzzle piece to County Road 34.
The plan covers an area of 3,800 acres of private land, or slightly less than six square miles.
The project, all on land now zoned for agriculture, includes the construction and operation of a utility-scale solar system with a generation capacity of 398 megawatts, a 200-megawatt battery energy storage system, inverters, medium=voltage collection lines, a project collector substation and a generation-tie transmission line, plus a utility switchyard that would be shared with another proposed solar project — Shephard Solar — directly northeast of the Buffalo Grass Solar project.
Under Elbert County zoning regulations, Buffalo Grass Solar will prepare Special Use by Review and 1041 permit applications for the project. If approved, construction could begin in late 2027 and commercial operation could start in 2030.
