Indian solar module manufacturers have reduced factory output as domestic solar cell shortages disrupt production. Nearly one-third of 140 small- and medium-sized makers have halted output under rules effective June 1. Other manufacturers are operating three or four days as cell waits reach six to eight months. India has about 200 GW of module capacity but only 27 GW of stated cell capacity. Effective operating cell capacity is estimated at around 16 GW to 18 GW across the country. Modules using domestic cells cost almost twice those made with Chinese cells, manufacturers told Reuters. India imports about 95% of its solar cells from China, despite efforts to expand local production. China’s restrictions on technology, equipment and technical support could slow new cell plants, while closing the supply gap may take three to five years. The shortage threatens thousands of jobs, nearly $4 billion of investment and India’s 2030 targets.
