Canadian Solar, an Ontario-based solar technology and manufacturing company, has opened a solar cell manufacturing facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The nearly $1 billion factory has been developed through its US manufacturing arm, CS PowerTech. The facility is designed to produce 6 GW of solar cells annually and employ more than 1,200 people when it reaches full production by early 2027. It is the first US factory designed to manufacture heterojunction (HJT) solar cells. Production from Indiana will supply Canadian Solar’s module factory in Mesquite, Texas, which is being expanded to 10 GW of annual capacity. The investment is expected to reduce the company’s dependence on imported solar cells while linking domestic cell and module production. US manufacturing incentives and tariffs on imported solar products supported the economics of the investment.
