KUALA LUMPUR: Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd has completed its first solar power installation project at its manufacturing plant in Melaka, marking a big step in its sustainability journey and long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The project, which was commemorated by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, involved about RM14 million investment.
The company said the initiative reflects its commitment to integrating sustainable practices into its manufacturing operations while supporting Malaysia’s renewable energy agenda.
The solar power system consists of about 8,960 solar panels installed across the rooftops of the Melaka plant, with a total generation capacity of more than 5.6 megawatts.
The company expects the system to generate about 7,042 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, reducing the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions by around 4,584 tonnes a year, equivalent to about 10 per cent of its total carbon emissions.
Honda Malaysia managing director and chief executive officer Narushi Yazaki said the project represents an important milestone in the company’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.
“Beyond reducing our environmental footprint, it reflects our commitment to responsible manufacturing and our aspiration to contribute towards a carbon-neutral future,” he added.
In addition to the solar photovoltaic system, Honda Malaysia has also installed a battery energy storage system, which stores excess solar energy for later use and helps ensure a more stable electricity supply for operations.
Yazaki said the company aims to expand its solar power initiative to its parts supply warehouse in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam, in 2027 as part of its broader sustainability strategy.
The solar project reinforces Honda Malaysia’s commitment to sustainable business growth while supporting Honda’s global target of achieving carbon neutrality across all products and corporate activities by 2050.
