Farmers and conservationists in the German state of Brandenburg are raising concerns about solar parks. At the heart of the conflict are limited land and the issue of who benefits from renewable energy production.
In the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park, opposition is growing to planned solar parks. Initiatives have been formed by farmers and conservationists who fear impacts on agriculture, the landscape and biodiversity. Tenant farmers are particularly affected as they compete with well-funded investors for access to land. A farmers’ association warns that pressure on agricultural businesses is rising. At the same time, local authorities view renewable energy as an important source of revenue. The dispute highlights a key challenge of the energy transition: how can climate protection, nature conservation and agricultural land use be balanced in a scientifically sound and socially equitable way?
