The Balearic Islands’ government has moved two large solar developments in Llucmajor into a faster administrative lane. Son Cànaves I and II and Na Forana would add 49,520 photovoltaic panels, 32.6 megawatts of peak panel capacity and 26.6 MW of installed capacity on Mallorca’s southern side.
The decision matters, but it is not a final construction permit. It places the projects among the Balearic Islands’ strategic industrial priorities while leaving environmental and sectoral approvals still to be completed, making Llucmajor a test of how quickly the islands can expand solar without losing sight of land and infrastructure limits.
The Balearic Council of Government declared both developments “strategic industrial projects,” a status intended to speed up administrative processing. The projects also received a favorable report from the Balearic Islands Industry Council, but the government said construction remains conditional on every authorization required under current environmental and sectoral rules.
That distinction is easy to miss. A strategic label can move paperwork faster, yet it does not put panels in the ground or electricity on the grid by itself. Think of it as a priority lane, not the finish line.
Both projects have already appeared in public information procedures run by the regional energy authority. Those files allow residents and other interested parties to review documentation and submit objections before final decisions are made.
Son Cànaves I and II is being promoted by Ventaja Solar 24. The current plan calls for 22,064 panels across about 21.8 acres, with 12.8 MW of peak capacity and 10.75 MW of installed capacity. A buried power line would run roughly 4 miles to the s’Arenal substation.
Na Forana is the larger generator of the two. Promoted by Univergy Renovables Lend, it would place 27,456 panels on about 11.4 acres and deliver 19.8 MW of peak capacity with 15.84 MW installed. The design also includes a step-up substation and an underground export line of about 3.9 miles to a collector substation.
Together, the two project areas would cover approximately 33.2 acres. Their combined DC-to-AC ratio is about 1.23, meaning the panels are rated roughly 23 percent above the inverter output sent to the grid. In practical terms, that can help the inverters operate closer to their limit during more hours of the day.
Llucmajor already has Mallorca’s largest concentration of solar parks either built, under construction or moving through the approval process. Local project data put the municipality’s share at around 30 percent of the island’s large solar plants planned for rural land, with the sa Marina area serving as the main cluster.
So the bigger story is not simply another 49,520 panels. It is the cumulative transformation of one part of Mallorca’s countryside into a major power-producing zone. Repeated projects make land, landscape and grid impacts more important than any single site suggests.
The underground lines show just how connected land use and electricity planning have become. Power generated inside a solar site is not useful until it can reach a substation with room to accept it. That is why cables, routes and connection capacity matter almost as much as the panels themselves.
The Balearic Islands made progress in 2025, but locally generated renewables still accounted for only 13.6 percent of electricity production, according to Red Eléctrica. Including rooftop and other self-consumption systems raised that share to 17.6 percent, while renewable power from local sources and the mainland link covered 26.7 percent of total demand.
Solar is already the islands’ dominant renewable technology, yet fossil-fueled generation remains central to the system. Electricity demand reached 6,313 gigawatt-hours in 2025 and rose 4.1 percent from the previous year. For households, those figures become real when the electric bill arrives and the grid is working through another hot August evening.
This is where projects like Son Cànaves and Na Forana fit in. They could help displace some fossil generation during sunny hours, but solar alone cannot carry the system after sunset. Storage, flexible generation, stronger networks and the mainland connection will still determine how much clean electricity can be used safely and reliably.
Both developers are planning buried export lines rather than relying only on equipment inside the solar sites. That choice can reduce the visual impact of overhead wires, but construction could still bring trenching, machinery, noise and temporary traffic changes along approved routes.
For nearby communities, those practical details may matter more than the headline capacity. Where will crews enter, how long could roads be affected and what restoration will be required after cables are laid? The remaining permit process is where those questions should receive clearer answers.
The projects’ strategic status may shorten delays between agencies, but it should not erase scrutiny. Final environmental conditions, connection rights and construction authorizations will decide whether the plans move forward as announced or return with changes.
The government’s announcement did not provide a construction start date or an expected opening date. Until the final permits are issued, the panel counts and power figures describe strategic proposals, not electricity already flowing to homes and businesses.
Watch for environmental decisions, grid connection approvals and public construction notices. At the end of the day, Llucmajor is becoming the clearest Balearic test of whether large-scale solar can expand quickly while treating the countryside and the electric network as more than afterthoughts.
