During the night, clean generation drops to zero, forcing utilities to continue reliance on fossil fuel plants.

The City of Los Angeles managed to scale up solar, stabilizing the grid during the night without fossil fuels.
In the U.S., California is the undisputed leader of solar generation, and for good reason.
Now, Los Angeles even benefits from clean electricity during the night. This is thanks to the Eland Solar-plus-Storage Center in the Mojave Desert.
Arevon Energy developed the $2 billion facility.
It consists of 758 MW of solar power and 300 MW of battery energy storage.
The power plant supplies 7% of Los Angeles’s entire electricity demand, powering over 266,000 homes.
At peak daylight hours, affordable, clean power is generated while the giant Tesla battery system charges.
Up to 1,200 MWh of energy can be stored.
At sunset, or when demand spikes, the battery system reacts within three seconds to deliver power to the grid.
During the first eight months of operation, more than 1,450 hours of clean electricity were supplied during the night.
Los Angeles proved that regional grids can be resilient without falling back on fossil fuels.
An additional benefit of the facility is that it relies entirely on American-made technology.
The panels use smart tracking systems, made from U.S.-fabricated steel. Furthermore, the Tesla storage units are made in California.
The solar power plant thus not only secures grid reliability, but also economic independence. Ultimately, it proves that nations can successfully power their modern economies with reliable clean energy.
