Aquila Clean Energy APAC, the Singapore-based subsidiary of German investment and asset development company Aquila Capital, has announced the successful commissioning of its 38 MWp Omeheu Solar Farm on New Zealand’s North Island.
“We are pleased to share that Omeheu Solar Farm in the Bay of Plenty has been successfully energised and is now exporting clean, renewable electricity to Aotearoa New Zealand’s grid,” the company said.
“The 38 MW plant will generate approximately 49.7 GWh of renewable electricity each year, supporting New Zealand’s growing demand for clean energy and contributing to the country’s energy transition.”
Aquila Clean Energy APAC Chief Executive Officer Alexander Lenz said the energisation of the Omeheu facility, featuring more than 63,000 solar modules installed across a 30-heactare site just outside of Edgecumbe, marks another important milestone for the company.
“With our second solar project now delivered in New Zealand, we are strengthening our long-term presence in the market and continuing to build and operate a high-quality renewable energy portfolio that supports the country’s energy goals,” he said.
The Omeheu Solar Farm is the second operational solar asset for Aquila in New Zealand, following the 20.8 MWp Pukenui PV plant in Northland, which was commissioned in October 2025.
Aquila Clean Energy took sole ownership of both projects in January 2026 after concluding a joint venture with Auckland-based renewables developer Far North Solar Farm.
The operational assets are part of Aquila Clean Energy’s broader New Zealand portfolio that includes a 580 MW pipeline of renewable energy projects being developed by across the country. This includes the 42 MWp Waiotahe, 40.6 MWp Marton, and the 39.4 MWp Foxton solar farms which are in the later stages of development.
Aquila Clean Energy is also active in the Australian market, having established a foothold in 2022 with the acquisition of a 220 MW / 440 MWh portfolio of battery energy storage projects in South Australia from Spanish renewables developed Gransolar Group.
Lenz said at the time that Australia was a key market and offered “immense opportunities” for the company.
Greek energy company Metlen Energy and Metals delivered the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the Omeheu Solar Farm and will be responsible for the ongoing operation and maintenance of the facility.
