Using fuel grown directly on the islands cuts dependence on imported crude oil shipped thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean.
The new units are also designed to convert to liquefied natural gas in the future if an LNG supply chain ever comes to Hawaii.
Instead of trapping the power grid into one single fuel source, this high-tech design keeps multiple doors open for decades to come.
It directly supports Hawaii’s clean energy goals while avoiding risky, all-or-nothing bets.
The primary two jet turbine units are scheduled to start full commercial operation in 2029.
The remaining units will roll out gradually in planned stages after that. This approach lets Hawaiian Electric upgrade its systems without causing dangerous electricity shortages.
When all six units are online, the facility will add over 250 megawatts of reliable power to O’ahu’s grid.
That is enough electricity to power tens of thousands of homes anytime it is needed, completely independent of weather conditions.
