Malaysia’s Solar Expansion Opens New Skills Pathway For Asnaf Community – BusinessToday Malaysia

MBSB Bank Bhd has partnered with the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA Malaysia) to fund professional solar certification for 61 members of the Asnaf community, as Malaysia’s renewable energy sector prepares for a larger expansion.
The RM146,400 zakat-funded initiative will support eligible wiremen and chargemen in completing SEDA Malaysia’s Grid-Connected Photovoltaic (GCPV) Systems for Wireman and Chargeman programme, equipping them with skills needed for solar installation, testing and commissioning work.
The participants already hold electrical qualifications issued by the Energy Commission, with the five-day programme providing additional training in grid-connected solar photovoltaic system integration, safety compliance and operational procedures. Those who complete the training and pass the competency examination will be recognised as SEDA Malaysia Qualified Person (QP), allowing them to undertake solar photovoltaic work within their professional scope.
MBSB Bank will provide RM2,400 per participant to cover course fees, learning materials, meals and certification examinations. The qualification could open pathways into skilled solar roles, with potential starting salaries estimated between RM2,800 and RM3,000 per month, while also allowing participants to take on independent or freelance solar projects.
The initiative comes as Malaysia prepares to introduce 2,650 megawatts of new solar capacity under the sixth round of the Large-Scale Solar (LSS6) programme. The expansion is expected to attract RM13 billion to RM15 billion in private investment and create between 15,000 and 20,000 jobs during the development and construction phases, increasing demand for qualified technical workers in the renewable energy sector.
