SolarAfrica has partnered with MPower, the energy platform of property investment company Moolman Group, and investment company Fledge Capital to develop a 184 MW utility-scale solar PV plant paired with a 300 MWh battery energy storage system in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
The Highveld Hybrid Energy project, located near eMalahleni, will use battery storage to hold electricity generated during the day and release it later when demand is higher. The developers say the arrangement will support wheeled renewable electricity supply from 2029, while giving customers access to cleaner power options than standard grid electricity.
No off-taker agreements are announced in the joint press statement but it is likely that the Moolman Group’s extensive retail property portfolio will form part of the project’s off-take arrangements.
The project adds to the growing number of hybrid renewable energy schemes being developed in South Africa as businesses look for more reliable and cost competitive power supply. By combining solar generation with storage, the partners aim to improve renewable energy penetration and provide greater flexibility in how electricity is used and delivered.
