FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The Turnstone Center flipped the switch Tuesday on a new solar panel array on top of its Plassman Athletic Center on North Clinton Street.
The system is expected to generate 650,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year and cover nearly half of the center’s annual electricity needs.
Chief Operating Officer Luke Morgan said the panels will help reduce operating costs and keep care more accessible for people with disabilities.
“We’re always trying to tackle barriers to care here at Turnstone Center, and one of those barriers is often cost,” Morgan said. “And so when we look at solutions like solar panels to help reduce our electrical costs, it helps keep our cost of care low, which makes care more accessible, and that’s what we stand for.”
“That’s our mission here, is to create possibilities.”
The solar panel system was funded through donations from foundations and local businesses.
