NEW DELHI, July 29 (Reuters) – India is unable to operate nearly 7% of its ‌solar power capacity at full output during peak ‌generation hours due to constraints in transmission infrastructure, it said on Wednesday.
• ​About 12 gigawatts of the clean energy capacity India currently has installed cannot supply full power to the grid, junior power minister Shripad Yesso Naik said in a written reply ‌to the country’s parliament.
• ⁠Solar power capacity in India has reached about 162 GW, making up nearly a third ⁠of the country’s non-fossil fuel power capacity.
• Curbs in transmission occur mainly during peak solar generation hours, when power flows ​can exceed ​the capacity of available ​transmission lines.
• About 21 GW ‌of India’s clean-energy capacity is feeding electricity into the grid through temporary connections while dedicated transmission infrastructure is being built, Naik said.
• The restrictions stem from a mismatch between the commissioning of clean energy projects and the transmission ‌systems meant to carry their output, ​he added.
• The disclosure highlights a ​key challenge for ​India as it rapidly expands non-fossil energy capacity ‌towards 500 GW from about ​296 GW.
• India ​was unable to deliver 8,133 gigawatt hours of solar power to the grid in the April to ​June period due ‌to transmission bottlenecks, compared with 6,900 GWh for the ​whole of 2025-2026, the government said.
