Austin, Texas-based solar and battery manufacturer T1 Energy has announced its acquisition of “foundational solar patents” from Singapore-based Evervolt Green Energy Holding.
Total considerations of the deal come to about $135 million, according to T1 Energy officials.
The newly purchased patents revolve mostly around Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon) solar cells and modules, T1 representatives say. These modules work to improve solar energy conversion efficiency, the firm says, by adding a thin oxide layer and a passivated contact to prevent energy loss.
These technological advancements have made TOPCon cells and modules some of the most advanced and most efficient commercially viable solar technology in the world, according to Daniel Barcelo, chairman and CEO of T1 Energy.
“Owning the intellectual property rights to leading silicon-based solar technologies is an important step to differentiate T1’s competitive position as a vertically integrated crystalline silicon U.S. solar manufacturer,” he says. “We also believe that this intellectual property will be accretive to T1 economically, in addition to yielding significant commercial and strategic benefits.”
The acquisition of the TOPCon IP not only presents “an important economic benefit” for T1 Energy, but furthers the Texan firm’s strategy for the North American market.
T1 has a grand vision for its place in the American solar market, officials say, and the TOPCon acquisition will go a long way in making that vision a reality. The company aims to build the U.S.’s first fully integrated polysilicon solar supply chain.
Should this strategy prove successful, T1 says it could become one of the leading solar manufacturers in North America.
“It is time to bring back American manufacturing. We’re doing that at T1 Energy,” Barcelo said in July 2025, upon revealing the company’s plan for building a polysilicon supply chain. “The Commerce Department’s 232 polysilicon investigation and the Solar 4 AD/CVD case should strengthen our efforts to build an American advanced manufacturing champion.
“We believe these cases will put the wind at our back and provide the right policy environment to execute our business plan.”
TOPCon solar cells and polysilicon panels promote high levels of cost efficiency, as well as high durability against inclement weather and a long lifespan even in harsh conditions. T1 aims to make use of the material’s abundance and scalability to build a domestic supply chain for the future of the American solar industry, officials say.
