The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in Shimla, India. The goal is to collaborate on research projects in the field of renewable energy, to facilitate the joint supervision of master’s and PhD students and to offer exchange programs. The collaboration will focus in particular on research into floating photovoltaic systems as well as agrivoltaics.
“India has great potential for floating PV installations, combined with ambitious expansion targets for renewable energy,” says Dr. Karolina Baltins, group leader for PV power plants at Fraunhofer ISE. “Similar to Europe, there are unclear permitting processes, public skepticism and unresolved research questions regarding plant economics, long-term system reliability and environmental impacts. We can learn a great deal from and with one another here.”
The MoU followed a joint Early Career Research Fellowship for the two scientists, Alexander Graef and Dr. Manish Kumar, under the auspices of the Indo-German Science and Technology Center (IGSTC). In 2025, Manish Kumar spent several weeks visiting research institutions in Germany, and in the spring of 2026, Alexander Graef spent five weeks conducting research at Indian organizations, particularly HPU.
