India has reported that nearly 7% of its solar capacity cannot operate at full output during peak generation hours. Transmission infrastructure constraints are affecting about 12 GW of installed clean energy capacity when solar generation reaches its daytime peak. India’s installed solar capacity has reached about 162 GW, accounting for nearly one-third of its non-fossil power capacity. About 21 GW is currently feeding the grid through temporary connections while dedicated transmission infrastructure is being completed. The restrictions reflect mismatch in the commissioning schedules between clean energy projects and the transmission systems intended to carry the generated power. India could not deliver 8,133 GWh of solar power during April-June because of transmission bottlenecks, compared with 6,900 GWh during the entire 2025-2026 period.
