The UK’s solar PV sector is expanding fast. By March 2026 total installed capacity had hit 22.1 GW, which is an unprecedented increase of 11.7% in just twelve months, a rate not seen for a decade. With clean sources now producing 63.7% of UK electricity generation it is clear that Solar is no longer emerging, it has emerged! And is now the defining technology of the UK’s clean energy transition.
For property, asset and facilities managers, this creates a clear opportunity, because solar PV delivers immediately, meaning carbon reductions are quantifiable, reportable under ESG frameworks, and visible in board reports from day one. This shift is reframing how organisations think about their buildings. A roof isn’t just a maintenance liability anymore, it’s a generation asset, and one with a payback period typically within three years; a value that compounds over 25 years or more.
Any successful installation begins long before a single panel is fitted. The journey starts with site surveys, a system designed around the building’s energy profile, and an installation planned around operational needs. However, what separates just any installation from a great installation, is what comes after. The real value is in the ongoing monitoring, maintenance, and optimisation. And when you pair that with current battery storage capabilities, then the full picture emerges. Energy generated at midday can be stored and deployed at peak demand, cutting bills by 40% or more on high-demand sites. That’s not just a projection. That’s what’s happening across the UK right now.
There is meaningful government support for solar PV, knowing what’s open and what’s coming is essential.
Open now and running until 2028. Delivered through local authorities in England, providing free solar PV for eligible low-income households (EPC rating D or below, income up to £36,000). Allocated in waves, once a council’s budget is spent, the next round must be awaited.




Phase 4 is currently awarding grants to local authorities, NHS trusts, schools, and government buildings, covering up to 100% of project costs. No new application windows have been announced beyond Phase 4, which runs to 2027/28. Monitor DESNZ and Salix Finance for future rounds.
ECO4 funds solar for fuel-poor households until December 2026, no successor confirmed. The Smart Export Guarantee pays 5–15p per kWh for any surplus exported to the grid. And 0% VAT on solar installation remains until March 2027, saving up to £2,000 on a typical system.
The UK’s clean energy landscape is not being shaped by ambition alone, it is being shaped by solar PV, installed, operational, and performing across thousands of buildings right now. The government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan targets 45–47 GW of solar capacity by 2030, more than double today’s installed base. For property, asset and facilities managers, the technology is proven, the funding is in place, and the results, as the projects in this edition demonstrate, speak for themselves.
