Solar cells manufactured in India and enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-II may soon be assigned a uniform 14-digit alphanumeric model code. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has now floated a draft proposal aimed at standardising product identification across the domestic solar manufacturing sector, to enable this. 
Through an Office Memorandum, the ministry has sought comments from stakeholders on the proposed nomenclature, which seeks to replace the diverse proprietary naming conventions currently used by manufacturers with a common identification framework. According to MNRE, the absence of a standard naming system has resulted in model names varying significantly across manufacturers, making it difficult to uniformly identify the technical characteristics of solar PV cells.
The proposed system introduces a 14-digit alphanumeric code that will function as a unique identifier for every ALMM-listed solar PV cell model while embedding key technical information within the model name itself. The nomenclature has been designed to improve product identification and traceability throughout the solar manufacturing value chain.
Under the draft framework, the first three characters of the code will indicate the origin of the wafer, ingot and polysilicon used in manufacturing, distinguishing between domestic and imported materials. The subsequent characters will identify the cell technology—such as Mono PERC, TOPCon, HJT or Back Contact—followed by wafer size, the number of busbars and a manufacturer-specific identifier denoting the product variant, revision or brand. The ministry has also provided illustrative examples of how the proposed coding structure would be interpreted.
Besides facilitating enrolment under ALMM List-II, MNRE said the standardised nomenclature is expected to promote uniform identification of solar PV cells across the industry and serve as a common product identifier for regulatory, commercial and other related purposes. The proposal will also help distinguish the domestic or foreign origin of key upstream materials used in manufacturing, complementing the Bill of Materials (BoM) disclosures applicable under ALMM.
The ministry has invited comments and suggestions from stakeholders on the proposed nomenclature. Feedback can be submitted to [email protected] by August 13, 2026, following which the ministry is expected to finalise the standard naming framework
