India-based government information agency the Press Information Bureau has reported continued solar capacity growth alongside the launch of a floating PV scheme. By the end of H1 2026, installed PV capacity had increased to 162.15 GW from roughly 3 GW in 2014. Additions reached 44.61 GW in FY 2025–26, almost double the 23.83 GW recorded a year earlier. The Government approved PM-SSY on 31 July 2026 to facilitate 5 GW of floating PV capacity with co-located storage. The storage systems will provide at least two hours, equivalent to 10 GWh, to support peak-demand management. The INR 5,070 crore (~$507 million) scheme will operate from FY 2026–27 through FY 2030–31 using reservoirs and industrial ponds. It will raise floating solar capacity from around 700 MW while promoting manufacturing of PV cells, modules, storage systems, and floatation systems.
