Sofidel has commissioned a new photovoltaic system at its Circleville facility in Ohio, United States, as part of the company’s strategy to increase the use of renewable energy across its operations.
The solar installation, located on the roof of the reel warehouse built during the site’s recent expansion, comprises 8,010 photovoltaic panels with a total installed capacity of 4.65 MW. According to the company, the system avoided approximately 1,084 tonnes of CO₂ emissions between January and June 2026, based on the area’s market-based emission factor of 454.9 gCO₂/kWh.
The project follows the commissioning of the facility’s third paper machine, which increased the site’s annual production capacity to more than 200,000 tonnes.
“The commissioning of the Circleville photovoltaic system will enable us to significantly reduce the environmental impact of one of our key production sites. It marks another step forward in the Group’s strategy to expand the use of renewable energy worldwide. Improving the energy efficiency of our operations is not only a fundamental environmental priority, but also an essential competitive lever for Sofidel,” said Antonio Cuccarese, Sofidel America Capital Projects Director – Paper Mill and Construction.
The company said the Circleville project is part of its broader decarbonization strategy. Among its recent initiatives are the commissioning of a biomass boiler at its Frouard facility in France and a photovoltaic system at its Rothley Lodge facility in the United Kingdom.
