A rooftop solar issue that might seem minor can get expensive quickly when it’s hard to determine what the problem is in the first place. 
In a post on Reddit, one homeowner asked in r/enphase whether there was a smarter way to identify a failed Enphase microinverter before opening up part of the roof.
The original poster explained that the array was split across two circuits, and the tripped one was eventually narrowed to a five-panel branch using Enphase IQ-7+ units. After disconnecting that segment, the other 16 panels continued producing power.
Testing then showed a sharp contrast between branches. The suspected five-panel run read near zero resistance, but another disconnected branch with functioning inverters measured in the megaohm range. Based on that difference, the homeowner suspected a short somewhere in the isolated section.
Those affected panels are in the hardest-to-reach row on the roof. That can spell labor and safety concerns as well as potentially high repair costs to track down a single failed component.
“Climbing around on the roof for a few hours to try to fix this wasn’t in my plans for the weekend, so thoughts for anything I can do to minimize the hassle would be extremely appreciated,” the OP concluded.
For a 21-panel system, losing five panels means almost 25% of the array’s generating capacity could go offline. Over time, that could mean less savings on utility bills, especially during sunny months when solar production is expected to offset the most grid electricity use.
And if a technician has to remove multiple panels just to reach the branch wiring, labor can quickly become the biggest expense.

If you encounter a similar issue, first check whether you have panel-level monitoring or installer access to module-level data. Because each panel has its own microinverter, production data can sometimes reveal which unit stopped performing normally before anyone needs to get on the roof.
If monitoring does not clearly identify the culprit, ask an installer or electrician whether they can isolate the fault before removing panels. That kind of targeted diagnostic work may reduce roof labor.
Document which branch tripped, what readings were measured, and which panels are on that circuit. Good notes can reduce service time, and shorter service time often means a lower bill.
